Why Bein builds Burnin and Cookin

Bein is a health company. It makes apps that measure how your own body handles what you eat, where most apps estimate it from a formula built on averages. Burnin works out your real daily calorie burn from what you log and what you weigh. Cookin keeps the recipes most of your meals come from, as ingredients and steps you can use. Both are free and need no account.

The problem with averages

A calorie tracker usually takes your age, height, weight and sex, puts them into a formula, and gives you a daily burn. That figure describes people built like you. For you in particular it can be far off, and the app keeps using it because it has no way to check. If you follow it and the scale does not move, the usual conclusion is that you did something wrong.

Many people already keep the two records needed to measure it: what they eat and what they weigh. Read together over a few weeks, they show how much energy your body actually uses.

What the apps do today

Burnin compares what you log with how your weight trend moves and works out your daily burn from that. Until it has enough data it shows the formula’s figure and labels it as new. After about a week of logs and a few weigh-ins it switches to your own measured number, with a range around it, and keeps measuring as you change. The method is in How Burnin measures your metabolic rate.

Most of what people eat at home starts as a recipe. Cookin turns a TikTok, a recipe link or a photo of a cookbook page into a recipe with ingredients and steps, keeps them in one library, and makes a grocery list from them. It can suggest healthier swaps that respect your allergies.

The two apps are separate today. Over time we would like them to work together.

Food photos

A calorie estimate from a food photo is unreliable in every app, ours included. Burnin takes calories from a food database wherever it can and measures your target from the scale (Burnin assumes the food AI is wrong). This blog and the YouTube channel explain how each number is worked out.

Burnin can export your diary in Onyx, an open format.

Why the AI runs on the phone

Burnin uses AI to log a meal from a photo or a sentence, and Cookin uses it to turn a photo of a cookbook page into a recipe. In both, the model runs on the phone, and there is no Bein server that stores your data. A food diary and a weight history together amount to a medical record, and we would rather not hold anyone’s. The costs of that choice, a large one-time download and a minimum phone spec among them, are in Why the AI runs on your phone.

Who makes it

Bein is one developer, who writes the apps, this blog and the videos.

The name stands for Being Intelligent, about what you eat and what your body does with it. The apps are named the same way, from a verb with the g dropped: Burnin from burning, Cookin from cooking.
